Time for an update....

.... A website update

And also a life update. I have been a wee bit slack on the blogging side of things. I have now nearly been working in a studio as a greetings card designer for 2 years. So I have picked up lots of extra drawing skills and have been feeling fulfilled with 40 hours employed drawing/designing. Though at the start of the year I started a new self initiated project to get me drawing in my own time again. Illustrated puns, mainly cat ones. Just a bit of cheeky fun. It's been getting quite a following on Facebook

Copycat baker

So my friend sent me a photo of a cake  today that she thought was really cool. And on closer inspection I could see that the face was one of my illustrations back from a few years ago. I was absolutely shocked to recognise the face that was starring back at me was one of mine, minus a hat and the instruments in the beard. I was shocked to see someone had copied my work. 

So I contacted the baker asking where she had got permission to use my illustration, as only I can provide that.  I got a quick response saying sorry but she felt that she hadn't copied my work but had used it as inspiration. She felt that changing the hat and beard made it her own. 

I have spent years mastering my skill and creating my own tone of voice. I felt insulted that she feels that she hadn't infringed my copywrite. She didn't want me to plaster over social media how she had copied my work as it could have a negative affect on her business. She should have considered that before she copied my style. 

To make it even more insulting, her cake would be featured in confetti fair magazine. No credit to me. 

I have no idea how she thinks that she hasn't copied my work, the evidence is in the photos below. 

She has since removed the photos off of her Instagram. It is not right to copy someone's style. People should have some integrity and when they copy should be made an example of! 

This is not on!

A friend of mine asked me to draw a little picture of a porch he'd like for his cat flap! A little front and side elevation and artist impression. Was very fun to doodle 

Greetings card project

So I've landed myself a new job as greetings card designer and these were my designs that I had to submit as part of the interview process. 

I am very happy that I will now be getting paid to draw. Yay. 

Uni2 know Magazine

I just thought that I would post up the illustrations that I did for Uni2 Know magazine Issue 2. The article was a guide to surviving the naff new years eve party. Fortunately my NYE was not naff.

Hey 2014. How you doing?
Sorry 2013. I didn't blog very much.
Living on a boat and not having wifi is the problem.
Ill try keep up with it this year.

So an update of my last few months.

Late summer I was commissioned to draw a load of spot illustrations for oakhouse foods for their winter catalogue.  In true katie ruby style I managed to get a cat in there!

I also recently contributed to kids with puns zine 2. That was cool. But what was cooler was that creative review blogged about it. And my work was on their home page.  Sweet

Not For Rental Exhibition

So I was asked to take part in Not For Rental, an exhibition inspired by film. The brief was to create a VHS sleeve inspired by a film, but not to put the title etc on the front, so the viewer had to guess the film.

Here is my entry

...and to my amazement, my VHS box was featured in an article on the guardian website.... awesome!

Website v2.2

Finally found the time to update my website. Unfortunately I only had iWeb to create it in but its a hell of a lot better than having the website that I made in university up in that crazy www.  So i’ve given it a fresh look, put all my lovely new work up there and am happy to supply jobs I apply for with my web address. I will update it regularly as there is some work I’ve done but can’t display yet....... its a surprise!!

Meanwhile I have been fairly busy, I have created a new blog header for lovepriority.com and also created an editorial piece for a fictional character featured in Tea Talk Magazine.

Hello new year! Hello bloggers! So I have decided that it is time to really pull my thumb out of my ass and get on with sorting out a new website, so here is a little doodle I’ve done for my About Me page. More new illustrations to come soon!
